By the late 1800’s, Edward “Beau” Lascelles, eldest son of the 1st Earl of Harewood, was a visionary supporter of the arts and set the standard for patronage in the art world. Harewood continues to this day to support arts and culture and offers an exceptional range of exhibitions combining work by world masters and emerging artists, as well as groundbreaking contemporary work to contrast and complement one of Yorkshire’s finest stately homes and visitor attractions. This exhibition breaks the mould yet again: young people aged 16 to 18 years old from Harrogate Grammar School have been given the opportunity to submit work, including painting, drawing, photography, design and writing, for a unique exhibition at The Courtyard at Harewood.
Harewood's partnership with Harrogate Grammar school is continuing to grow with a ground breaking training day being held at Harewood for over 600 delegates from across 4 schools and 3 local authorities.
The partnership is now in its second year and its remit has grown to take in both wider age ranges and more varied subjects (art, geography, travel and tourism, history, media studies, and English). We have held several successful Art and Design days for Gifted and Talented students as well as two poetry workshops with poet Pete Sansom.
A primary school art workshop for local primary schools, held over two days at Harewood has also produced work to be exhibited at Harewood during the exhibition.
The Harewood Hospitality team have been more involved this year, teaching students how to make canapés and how to serve them as well as how to run an event, so that students could help to run their own preview evening.
By supporting the Harrogate Grammar School Summer Exhibition, the Trust has secured match funding to create two new teaching spaces in the art faculty at the school. The students were photographed alongside their artworks at the exhibition preview last night.
Says Jennifer Auty, Learning and Access Officer at Harewood: ‘We are so impressed by the commitment, originality and skills of the pupils and we’re privileged to have so high a standard and breadth of work from such a talented group. It’s an extraordinary insight into the artistic mind of the young, and if you come expecting your regular end of year art show, then prepare to be amazed’.
Says Stephen Woollard, Design Faculty Leader and Director of Specialism: ‘Young people are inspired in such surprising ways. Work wasn’t just chosen on its own merits or what we as adults might like. It was carefully selected by the pupils themselves, adult representatives from the school and the team at Harewood. They were either given free rein to produce work or submit pieces related to their curriculum from this past school year. It’s an eclectic mix of work by these young artists and we’re delighted to be joining the list of celebrated exhibitions at Harewood.’
Harrogate Grammar School Summer Exhibition is open to the public daily Friday 23rd July - Tue 31st August. Visit the exhibition webpage for more details…
