David Lascelles has invited Tibetan monk Geshe Tashi Tsering to Harewood House to disperse a sand mandala. The Chenrezig sand mandala was made in 2005 at the time of the consecration of the Harewood Stupa by monks from Punakha Dzong in Bhutan.
The ceremony takes the form of a chanting meditation during which the mandala is swept up and then dispersed into the waterfall. Buddhists regard the destruction of the mandala as a reminder of impermanence and its dispersal into water as a way of sending out healing to the planet.
The ceremony will commence on Sunday 27 September 2009 at 3.00pm in the Gallery at Harewood House, followed by a procession to the waterfall by the Himalayan Garden.
Members of the public who would like to see the ceremony taking place in the Gallery will be allowed access to the House (even if you only have a grounds ticket) between 2.45pm and 3.00pm on the day.
