11.00am - 4.00pm
In the Terrace Gallery
As part of our season of exhibitions looking at landscape, and how artists have been inspired to make observations from nature to lead them to formal or symbolic abstraction, we are currently showing the stunning work of acclaimed contemporary artist Clare Woods.
The exhibition explores the relationship between people and the landscape, and includes four ambitious new works inspired by the history and landscape of Harewood.
The title of Woods' solo show at Harewood, The Seven Eggs, itself comes from an 18th century folly of the same name set in the Grounds here; once with a vista, it is now surrounded by trees and has become reclaimed by the landscape.
“After spending some time in the house and looking at the objects in the collections I have found myself drawn to the representations of the past inhabitants of the Harewood Estate. They have all left their mark on the landscape, creating vistas, lakes, walled gardens, follys and pools. I am interested to work with the representations of these people.”
Turning the industrial process of lithography on its head to produce large-scale one-off pieces, Clare Woods' works are inspired by the wonderful alabaster tombs in Harewood's All Saints’ Church.
Through the carefully drawn line and bold brushes of colour which are taken from the veining of the stone, Woods captures a sense of the uneasy feeling of the tombs, while the process of joining the two lithographic plates interrupts the image, reminding us of the disturbing nature of these distorted faces.
Working in collaboration with litho expert Stephanie Turnball, the works showcase Clare's distinctive style, but represent a significant departure from her previous works of intertwining colours and virtual landscapes.
A new publication accompanies the exhibition, available from the House Desk and Information Centre, including an essay by Stephen Feeke, Curator at Roche Court Gallery & Sculpture Park.
