10.30am - 3.00pm
Be transported back in time to a period before Harewood House stood on this site.
Enjoy the expertise of our guides and indulge your imagination on a tour around the site focussing on the Middle Ages.
Long before the construction of the now iconic Harewood House, the massive Harewood Estate consisted of a Medieval Manor – Gawthorpe Hall, the 14th century Harewood castle and the 15th century church. The University of York’s Archaeology department have been working to uncover the hidden history of Gawthorpe, excavating the site of the manor house on the south front between the lake and Harewood House. Our guides will take you on a tour to ignite your curiosity in Medieval Harewood.
This will include a visit to All Saint’s Church* to view some of the finest examples of Alabaster tombs in England which provide a unique history of medieval armour and costume, and of the development of the art of alabaster carving for which England was famed.
