    Medieval Harewood Weekend

    Saturday 17 July 2010 - Sunday 18 July 2010
    11.00am - 3.00pm

    Girls on grass

To celebrate the Festival of British Archaeology, we'll be exploring the story of Medieval Harewood with The University of York’s research team led by Dr Jonathan Finch.

Since 2009, the team have been busy assessing, surveying, and excavating part of the field below the south terrace of Harewood House where map analysis suggested the archaeological remains of Gawthorpe Manor, the medieval manor house which preceded the building of Harewood House, existed.

On and around the weekend of 17th and 18th July, we will be celebrating the Festival of British Archaeology with a number of guided tours of the excavation, a chance to look at and learn about the archaeological finds that are being made and family activities for budding archaeologists!

Gawthorpe Dig with York University Archaeology Department - gawthorpe old drawing

You can discover how Harewood may have looked during the Middle Ages on our digitally re-created fly-over of Harewood at that time. See some fascinating artefacts found at the Gawthorpe Hall site. Excavations have already recovered a large amount of medieval ceramics dating from the 12th - 15th century, as well as examples from the 17th and 18th century, including a half-complete white salt-glazed ware chamber pot!

    Walks...

    At 1.30pm

A guided walk will take visitors from the House to All Saints Church exploring and bringing together many aspects of Harewood’s history. Meet at the House Desk.

& Talks to find out more...

    At 11.30am and 2.45pm

Talks will be given by the archaeological team who have been excavating the site of the manor house which stood on the Harewood Estate in Medieval Times. Meet at the gate next to the Bird Garden.
