This comfortable and informal room has views onto the east garden and, to the South, the Terrace, designed by Barry in the 1840s. The central bronze statue is of Orpheus by the sculptor Astrid Zydower (born 1930). The gentle undulations of Capability Brown's landscape lie beyond.

For the last 40 years, the 7th Earl and Countess of Harewood have quite unintentionally put together what is a unique and thoroughly thrilling collection of 20th century painting, drawing and sculpture by British and International artists, some of whom were in their time unfashionable or unacceptable, misinterpreted and misunderstood.

Bronzes in this room are by Henri Gaudier Brzeska (1891-1915) and Sir Jacob Epstein (1880-1959) including heads of the current Lord and Lady Harewood by Austin Bennett.

Works included in the modern collection (or the 'new things' as Lord Harewood calls them) are by Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, bought at a time when there was little interest in the artist by public galleries. Egon Schiele is well represented, the drawings bought at prices which to quote the Earl 'now seem ludicrously low'. The work of Indian painted MF Husain, still alive and suffering from controversy and political persecution, is also in abundance, Lord and Lady Harewood having been friends with the artist since the 1960s.
