In John Jewell’s 1819 ‘Tourist’s Companion’ to Harewood House, these two rooms are listed as ‘The Couch or Bath Room’ and ‘The Blue Room’. Both rooms were refurbished in the late 1980s as an area where it would be possible to display the Harewood collection of watercolours – a collection of National importance, which includes paintings by Turner, Girtin and Varley. Due to the fragile nature of watercolours however, we cannot keep the pictures on permanent display.
The Watercolour Rooms now also house temporary exhibitions of painting, sculpture, drawing and photography – a platform for Harewood’s commitment to interpretation of the permanent collections and to contemporary art.
