This room was the first to be completed and is perhaps one of the most complete of Adam's schemes. The set of chairs were made for this room in the early 1770s by Chippendale as were the folding library steps.
The bookcases are divided by Corinthian columns and are surmounted by either bronzed busts or paintings by Biagio Rebecca. Paint scrapes revealed Adam's decorative scheme of green, white and grey and these colours have been used in the repainting of the room.
A posthumous bust of Her Royal Highness Princess Mary, the current Lord Harewood's mother, by F.E.McWilliam (1990-1992) can be seen in this room.
