This February half term, get your wellies on and get out and about at Harewood's Love Nature event - a fabulous week to celebrate the coming of Spring. 

nature fest flat pageIn honour of conservation and all things natural, we're putting together a schedule of fun activities to celebrate the great outdoors to be enjoyed by children and adults alike. Love nature, love Harewood...

Activities include:

  • Make and take crafts: Get crafty making your own bird feeders, cress & grass heads, plantpots, or personalise a welly peg or sticker to take home! 11am – 4pm Education Rooms and Bird Garden Marquee. Charges Apply approx. £1 per craft.

  • Join our Head Gardener Trevor Nicholson for a talk and walk around Harewood's wonderful Gardens, exploring the grand, venerable, ancient and elegant trees we have here. 2.30pm 13th - 19th Feb, wrap up warm and meet at the Courtyard.

  • Our Bird Garden Curator John Waller will be showing our visitors around the Bird Garden. You'll meet some of the most popular residents of the Bird Garden and see the daily Penguin feeding too! 1pm daily, meet at the Courtyard.

  • Pottery demonstrations with Fired Art Designs will be taking place throughout the day, using paints, brushes, stencils, stamps and sponges... and the opportunity to have a go yourself. Gawthorpe Room. Charges apply. £5 per piece.

  • Wooden Furniture demonstrations with Mawdsley Williams. Mawdsley Williams are all about individual design... 'Foodies are connoisseurs of good food, woodies appreciate fine timber. You know who the foodies are, well come in and meet the woodies'. Daily 11th – 16th Feb.

  • Seed Potting: plant a seed or plant to take away with you and watch it grow! Daily 13th - 19th Feb.

  • All you ever wanted to know about using Aplaca fleece or keeping Alpaca's with the Yorkshire Alpaca Group: Alpacas and spinning alpaca wool demonstration, sales of alpaca wool goods. Daily 16th – 19th Feb.

  • NEW! 'Environmental Swap Shop' - the ultimate recycling depot, bring your un-needed gems to swap for a more desirable piece...Wooden goods, clothing (good condition), toys and small items which will fit in an average-sized car... Unfortunately we can't accept anything that requires special disposal eg. electrical goods.

  • Red Kite info point and viewings. Daily throughout the day. Talks 15th Feb only, 11am and 2pm.

  • Spot the Owls: Family fun owl trail. In the Bird Garden.

  • Catch-a-Monkey: Guess where the monkey is hiding and win a prize!

Events 2012 - pottery lemon bowlSpend an evening with expert private tuition from Fired Art Designs. Rachel’s Workshops use fun, easy techniques. You will be working on a readymade large bowl that has been fired to bisque for you to paint with beautifully vibrant underglazes. Your work of art will then go back to Rachel’s studio to be glazed and re-fired before being returned for you to collect. The item is made of high quality clay and is totally food safe for you to use.
No experience is necessary as Rachel will demonstrate the technique making it oh so easy.

Harewood is pround to be launching a series of continuing professional development day workshops in Art and Design for Primary School Teachers...perfect for Primary Teachers as well as Design and Technology Subject Leaders.

Using Artists and their work as a starting point for creative work across the Primary curriculum, this workshop will explore exciting ways of developing art and cross-curricular work, and will draw on Harewood and its collections and environment as a fantastic resource.

Classes are £85 per day (9.30am - 3.30pm in the Education Suite at Harewood) and you can sign up to one, or the whole course as you please!

We are pleased to be working with Jo York, Visual Arts Consultant with over 20 year’s experience in the arts and education and also the Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation.

More about the Classes...

Classes will take account of participants' previous knowledge and experience - helping you to identify development opportunities, model effective learning and teaching strategies, develop skills, knowledge and understanding which will be practical, relevant and applicable to your current role or career aspiration, and evaluate your progress throughout. 

'Research shows that pupils learn best when staff are motivated, developed and updated. Research also indicates positive links between pupils’ learning and sustained CPD.' Training and Development Agency for Schools.

The day will include a buffet lunch and opportunity to enjoy the Gardens and Grounds or a coffee from our Courtyard Cafe after you finish for the day.

Starting from Wednesday 16th May 2012 Red Kite talks and viewings are held regularly throughout the year at Harewood.

Find out more about these wonderful birds through an illustrated talk from Doug Simpson from Yorkshire Red Kites and Project Officer for the original release programme. You will then have the opportunity to accompany Doug to view these fantastic birds in action.


•    NB various start times.
•    Illustrated Talk approx 1hr.  Viewing approx 1hr
•    Please wear appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear.
•    Please bring binoculars if you have them.
•    If you cannot stand for long periods please bring a folding chair/mat to sit on for the viewing.
•    Viewing is weather permitting.
•    No Children under 10yrs will be admitted.
•    Access Information: There is lift access to the Education rooms in the Courtyard where the talk takes place.
It is a short, level, paved walk from the Courtyard to the viewing area. The viewing takes place on Sunnyside the sloping field between the Terrace and the lake. Depending upon ground conditions it may not be suitable for wheelchairs.

Find out more about these wonderful birds through an illustrated talk from Doug Simpson from Yorkshire Red Kites and Project Officer for the original release programme. You will then have the opportunity to accompany Doug to view the Kites in action.


•    NB various start times.
•    Illustrated Talk approx 1hr.  Viewing approx 1hr
•    Please wear appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear.
•    Please bring binoculars if you have them.
•    If you cannot stand for long periods please bring a folding chair/mat to sit on for the viewing.
•    Viewing is weather permitting.
•    No Children under 10yrs will be admitted.
•    Access Information: There is lift access to the Education rooms in the Courtyard where the talk takes place.
It is a short, level, paved walk from the Courtyard to the viewing area. The viewing takes place on Sunnyside the sloping field between the Terrace and the lake. Depending upon ground conditions it may not be suitable for wheelchairs.

Harewood is pround to be launching a series of continuing professional development day workshops in Art and Design for Primary School Teachers...perfect for Primary Teachers as well as Design and Technology Subject Leaders.

This workshop is a non-scary guide for non-subject specialists! Tips and tricks for key media and techniques with loads of ideas for classroom activities.

Classes are £85 per day (9.30am - 3.30pm in the Education Suite at Harewood) and you can sign up to one, or the whole course as you please!

We are pleased to be working with Jo York, Visual Arts Consultant with over 20 year’s experience in the arts and education and also the Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation.

Classes will take account of participants' previous knowledge and experience - helping you to identify development opportunities, model effective learning and teaching strategies, develop skills, knowledge and understanding which will be practical, relevant and applicable to your current role or career aspiration, and evaluate your progress throughout.

The day will include a buffet lunch and opportunity to enjoy the Gardens and Grounds or a coffee from our Courtyard Cafe after you finish for the day.
