In John Jewell’s 1819 ‘Tourist’s Companion’ to Harewood House, these two rooms are listed as ‘The Couch or Bath Room’ and ‘The Blue Room’. Both rooms were refurbished in the late 1980s as areas where it would be possible to display the Harewood collection of watercolours – a collection of national importance, which
includes paintings by Turner, Girtin and Varley. Due to the fragile nature of watercolours the pictures are not on permanent display.
The Watercolour Rooms now house temporary exhibitions of painting, sculpture, drawing and photography – a platform for Harewood’s commitment to interpretation of the permanent collections and to contemporary art.
