The Gallery was one of Robert Adam’s most magnificent achievements, with ceiling paintings by Biagio Rebecca covering an area 76 feet long and 24 feet wide.
In the 1840s the room was changed. Brackets replaced the columns supporting the central arches of the three triple windows, the chimneypiece that was part of Robert Adam’s design was moved to the Dining Room and two Victorian replacements were installed. In a major programme of restoration, the room was returned to its original design in the late 1980s.
The Gallery includes Harewood’s famous collection of Old Master paintings including works by El Greco, Veronese, Bellini, Titian and Cima. The pictures are complemented by an outstanding collection of Chinese porcelain, mirrors with flanking cherubs, torchères, and Chippendale’s fantastical pelmets, carved from wood to imitate a heavy fabric, the only ‘curtains’ the room was intended to have and the only time he indulged his wonderful craftsmanship in this way.
The Gallery is available for corporate events and private dinners.
