The Steward was at the top of the staff hierarchy in the 18th century and would act as the master of the house in proxy. He dealt with all aspects of the estate both inside and out. The Steward was the only member of staff who wore no livery or uniform. He was responsible for hiring and firing the domestic servants and he kept the household accounts. The Steward’s Room acted as the Dining Room for upper servants and visiting staff. It was decorated accordingly and presided over by the Butler and the Housekeeper as recently as 1939.
The Steward’s Room is available as a wedding venue or for meetings and corporate events.
