    Terrace Gallery

Originally called The Sub Hall, this large room was designed as a link between the House and the Grounds, somewhere for wet dogs and muddy boots. Later it was used for storage and as an indoor play area for generations of Lascelles children.

In 1989, the Sub Hall underwent a major transformation and became the Terrace Gallery, the first contemporary art gallery in an English country House.

“Images of Paradise”, the first exhibition in the new space, featured works by 59 artists. These works were then auctioned to raise money for Survival International, a charity dedicated to protecting the rights of tribal people all over the world.

Since then, the Terrace Gallery has had exhibitions by a wide range of artists, including Antony Gormley, Sir Sidney Nolan, Andy Goldsworthy, David Hockney, Andy Warhol and Dame Elizabeth Frink.

In 2012 Harewood is pleased to be hosting a special collection of photographs generously lent by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II from the Royal Collection. ‘Marcus Adams: Royal Photographer’, will showcase photographs from the Queen’s childhood, celebrating HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year.
