Harewood House
Home to the Earl and Countess of Harewood, the State Floor reflects not only their taste in art and architecture but also that of previous generations of the Lascelles family who have made it their home since the 1770s and in 2009 we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the laying of the House’s foundation stone with exhibitions including paintings by famous English landscape artists JMW Turner, John Varley and Thomas Girtin, rarely on display. You will also see the original exquisite interiors designed for the House under the instruction of Edwin Lascelles in the 1770s by famous Scottish architect and designer Robert Adam alongside the complementary furniture by his contemporary and local famous Yorkshireman Thomas Chippendale. And for those with an interest in art Harewood is proud of its collection ranging from Italian Renaissance masterpieces by such artists as Veronese, Titian, Bellini and El Greco through Turner watercolours and portraits by Joshua Reynolds to works by Picasso and Epstein.
In the newly re-displayed Below Stairs Experience you are taken back to the Victorian and Edwardian days in the restored Old Kitchen, Scullery and Still Room, discovering how the servants lived, worked and serviced this great Yorkshire Country House.
Lord Harewood’s mother, HRH Princess Mary, the Princess Royal, lived at Harewood from 1930 to 1965 so don’t miss the rooms dedicated to her life here, including her wedding dress and bouquet along with family photograph albums for you to browse through.
