At Harewood Bird Garden, research activities take place at different levels - all managed by the Curator and the Research Officer.
The Bird Garden regularly hosts field days for research students undertaking undergraduate and post graduate courses from University Biology & Zoology departments, introducing them to an aspect of conservation they might not have considered.
What we offer to students doing research at Harewood:
• Access to a specialist collection of approximately 90 bird species.
• The opportunity to carry out field work in a supportive environment, without the expenses of overseas work.
• Experience working in a real life conservation organisation.
• The chance to plan and realise work that hasn’t been done before.
• Possible publication of papers and presentation of research at BIAZA conferences.
• Access to previous and ongoing research projects, computer & internet access, basic kitchen facilities and staffroom.
• Advice and support from our experienced Research Officer, Bird Keepers and Curator.
• Links to other zoo collections.
• Access to BIAZA, EAZA & ISIS ARKS4 associated data resources.
What we offer Biological science based undergraduate work experience students:

• Proven work history for future employers and suitable references.
• A supportive environment with full staff facilities and computer access.
• Advice and support from experienced Research Officer, Bird Keepers and Curator.
• Links to other zoo collections.
• Access to BIAZA, EAZA & ISIS ARKS4 and associated data resources.
• Chance to work in a broad experience work placement, to specify which areas involved are suitable or not for their future career path.
We may supply information about the Bird Garden and its collection, upon emailed or written request to the Bird Garden Curator, for use in Undergraduate or Postgraduate projects not based at Harewood. In return we request a final copy in paper and electronic format of all project work and we will make the copies of all projects available to future students at Harewood and other zoo collections to view if asked.
