The Ice House was designed by John Carr and built in 1761. Each winter the Ice House was filled with ice from the lake.
The ice was then pounded into small pieces, tightly packed into layers and covered with straw to help keep it cool. The ice was not suitable for cooking as it contained impurities from the lake, but was used to keep food and drink cool.
You can find the Ice House by following the path that leads down from the Penguin Terrace, behind the Courtyard Café.
