Harewood House was built in the late eighteenth century, was altered significantly during the Victorian period and was home to Princess Mary from 1930 until her death. Its classical design is strongly influenced by Ancient Greece and its gardens and bird garden contain species collected from a range of contrasting environments around the world.

The House, gardens, adventure playground and bird garden are a motivating environment for learning. If you do not know Harewood you could take the 'virtual tour' in this web site. All teachers are invited to make a complimentary planning visit to Harewood. See planning your visit for details.

Resources
History KS 1 (Yr1)
Unit 2 - “What Were Homes Like a Long Time Ago”

We can provide:

  • An information pack for teachers and helpers on how the State Floor fits into this area of the curriculum. It includes information specifically designed to be read out to the children around the house and activities based on the rooms during the tour.

    Packs are available on request.

  • Simple guided tours by the Senior House Guides designed for children around the curriculum. Topics covered include: external and internal features, comparisons with their own homes (size, decoration, heating and lighting), introduction of chronology.

  • Also available Astounding Archaelogy Resource Pack - KS1 and KS2. This pack is available to download at the bottom of this page.

Encourage your pupils to look for evidence and find out about the past by following this trail around All Saints' Church in the grounds. The pack has pre, on site and post visit work and covers conservation, stratigraphy, chronology, numeracy and literacy.

All Saints' Church is managed by the Churches Conservation Trust.

The trail was written in association with Dan Eaton CE Primary School, Bradford, and his pupils and was funded by Yorkshire Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.

To be arranged when a visit is booked through the Bookings Co-ordinator on 0113 2181013.

    History (Yr 5/6)
Unit 11 – “What was it like for children living in Victorian Britain?”
Unit 12 – “How did life change in our locality in Victorian Times?”

To support these units we can provide:
  • The resource of the Below Stairs exhibition with a Victorian kitchen and domestic equipment. There are costumes to try on, interactive computer workstations to play with and a small handling collection.
  • A teacher-led resource pack, (available to download at bottom of page or contact us).
  • A Learning and Access led handling session; see below for details.
  • House guides who are child-friendly and always willing to help.

Victorian Object Handling Session led by Learning and Access Staff.
Handle actual Victorian artefacts! Dress-up as a Victorian servant!

In a one-hour session, pupils will handle objects from the Victorian period with guidance from a member of the Harewood Learning and Access team who will lead the session.

    Topics covered include:
  • Domestic issues (heating, lighting, washing)
  • Servant life and how the lives of their employers differed
  • Family (size, health care, mortality, childhood)
  • Women (franchise, differing role for different classes
  • Fashion and taste (costume, style)
  • Industrialisation
  • Empire
  • Religion

Sessions can be tailored to suit the group’s level, ability and depth of study. Certain areas can be focussed on more according to the requests of the teacher.
The object handling may involve contact with mild detergents and other possible allergens. It is requested that the teacher inform the education staff at Harewood if any child participating in the activity may potentially be allergic to the products on display.
Would you like to pilot materials with your group? Do you have your own activities that have worked well here and you would like to share with other schools?

Do you know the site well and have other suggestions? We'd love to hear from you. Please contact us to take this further.
