The House, gardens, adventure playground and bird garden are an exciting environment for cross-curricular topics such as 'Plants & Trees' and 'Homes Long Ago'.

KS1 Activities: House
History 'What were Homes like a Long Time Ago?'
Seek out fireplaces, servants’ bells and chamber pots that make historical homes different from today.

To support this unit we can provide:

• An information pack for teachers on how the State Floor fits into this area of the curriculum. It includes information specifically designed to be read out to the children around the House and activities based on the rooms during the tour. Packs are available on request.

• Simple guided tours by the Senior House Guides designed for children around the curriculum. Topics covered include: external and internal features, comparisons with their own homes (size, decoration, heating and lighting), introduction to chronology. To be pre-arranged when a visit is booked through the Bookings Co-ordinator on 0113 2181013.

Cross-curricular Links Literacy: Children can read some of the information themselves.
Numeracy: The tessellating and symmetrical patterns around the House can develop counting and sequencing skills.
Science: What the house is made from, fires and fireplaces.
Art and Design: There are drawing activities in the pack.
Design and Technology: The Below Stairs exhibition provides an excellent resource to looking at how cooking has changed in the last 150 years.
ICT: There are computer based interactive workstations placed around the House

Art and Design
Use the House, gardens and grounds as inspiration for:
Year 1 / 2 (Unit 2B) “Mother Nature, Designer”
Year 3 / 4 (Unit 4C) “Journeys”
Year 5 / 6 (Unit 6C) “A Sense of Place”

A teacher resource pack is available to download at the bottom of this page to support these units or contact us for a copy.

Use the Robert Adam ceilings, classical patterns and printed designs on silk wallpaper as a springboard for work on:
Year 3 / 4 (Unit 3B) “Investigating Pattern”

Maids and Mistresses
To run alongside our Maids and Mistresses trail about the women of Yorkshire’s Country Houses, the Yorkshire Country House Partnership in conjunction with the University of York and the Heritage Lottery Fund have produced a resource pack. The information in the pack can be applied to Key Stage 1: Homes Long Ago, contact us for a Resource Pack or follow link at bottom of page to download the Resource Pack.

Numeracy Resources: House and Grounds

Numbers are beautiful! Maths is everywhere you look! From the symmetry of patterned ceilings, to clocks and weighing scales, and counting the birds in the Bird Garden as data; numbers can be found in allsorts of places.

We have recently developed cross-site Numeracy trails to support work from Reception class to Year 6. The trails give real life situations in which Maths can be used creatively to solve problems. Beginning on the State Floor looking at repeating patterns and shapes, continuing in the Below Stairs exhibition looking at Roman Numerals and weighing, and ending in the Bird Garden; the trails provide an interesting new way to look at Harewood.

The trails are teacher-led and come with comprehensive teaching notes.

The following trail is for KS1:

  • KS1 Maths is Everywhere!

Follow link at bottom of this page to download this maths resource.

Also available Astounding Archaelogy Resource Pack - KS1 and KS2. This pack is available to download at the bottom of this page.

Encourage your pupils to look for evidence and find out about the past by following this trail around All Saints' Church in the grounds. The pack has pre, on site and post visit work and covers conservation, stratigraphy, chronology, numeracy and literacy.

All Saints' Church is managed by the Churches Conservation Trust.

The trail was written in association with Dan Eaton CE Primary School, Bradford, and his pupils and was funded by Yorkshire Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.

KS1 Activities: Bird Garden and Grounds

Talks - Allow 30 to 45 minutes depending on group size.

Dead or Alive? With the use of a variety of artefacts, natural products and live animals we will look at the similarities and differences between them. A selection of live invertebrates and reptiles will also be shown.

Close Creatures: Focus on small animals with exoskeletons, scales or fur. Talks can be tailored to meet your curriculum requirements. Live animals are used during the talk, some of which may be handled.

Focus on Birds: An introduction to the wonderful world of birds. Eggs and feathers are handled during this talk.

Pick Me! Focus on the need for classification, with the use of bio-artefacts and pictures. By looking at the things they have in common, together, we will try to group the animals on display. Bio-artefacts used during this talk.

Red Kites return: Red Kites are back in Yorkshire! Learn about how they became extinct and follow their re-introduction. Hopefully you will see them on the day! Feathers are handled during this talk.

Practical Sessions – Allow 1 hour

Neat Nests: How important is nest building to birds? During this practical we will look at a few species of bird, then using materials already collected, have a go at building our own nests! Can it be done? Animal hair and feathers used in this practical.

Feed the Birds: Not the birds in the Bird Garden, the native birds in your garden or school grounds. Focus on the adaptation and diet of exotic species, as well as the more familiar species whilst mixing and moulding bird feeders. Messy fun! Nuts and other food materials used during this practical.

Beak Bonanza Tour: Check out the array of beaks in the Bird Garden. Can you match the bird beak with the tool? After looking at some of the birds we will use jigsaws and artificial food to try and match birds, beaks and diet. A variety of household items are used to represent types of beak. Includes objects such as nutcrackers.

Fun Feet Tour: A close up on the amazing variety of feet in the Bird Garden. Why so many different kinds of feet?
