Part of a set of three tables provided by Chippendale for the private rooms. They are all slightly different in their carved detail around the stem, but they conform to a standard design employed by Chippendale throughout his career. The simple and unassuming appearance of these tables implies that they were for general use around the house; i.e. for reading, writing, sewing or even serving tea upon. The hexagonal top tips up vertically so that it could be stored away to the side when not in use, but they are small and light enough to be moved around the room and house whenever they were required.
They were relatively inexpensive items and could be bought directly from Chippendale's showroom in St Martin's Lane. They were not designed especially for Harewood House and similar tables can be found in many house that were furnished by Chippendale.
