15th March to 2nd November
In the 18th Century, through the Lascelles family’s association with the East India Company, the Harewood collection was filled with decorative objects made in China.
When Edwin Lascelles built Harewood House in the 1760s, objects were shipped over from China and India, as well as commissioned European items in the Chinoiserie taste - which was often an imaginary and exoticised view of the East.
Many of these exceptionally beautiful objects are displayed in our exhibition rooms, next door to the refurbished East Bedroom. They include a lacquer secretaire by Thomas Chippendale, Chinese fish bowls on Chippendale stands, Kangxi and Qianlong fine Chinese porcelain, ormolu mounted celadon porcelain, armorial porcelain and exquisite jade, collected in the last century by Princess Mary, the mother of the present Earl.
Contemporary Chinese Art in the Terrace Gallery
Fiona Wong and Wilson Shieh Ka-Ko
17 May - 3 August
This exhibition will bring together the work of two Hong Kong based artists, Fiona Wong (b.1964) and Wilson Shieh Ka-Ho (b.1970). It will be the first major exhibition for these two fascinating Chinese artists in the UK.
Fiona Wong and Wilson Shieh both share a thoughtful understanding for traditional techniques and media and they both play with modern motifs. Both artists will be showing their recent works which have never been seen in the UK. They will also be making new work that responds to the newly installed Chinese wallpaper and the Harewood collection of Chinese Ceramics. Both artists will be giving a talk about their work on 17 May.
Harewood House Trust Curator Sarah Brown has been working in close collaboration with Ying Kwok, Curator at the Chinese Arts Centre in Manchester.
